Is a sponge filter enough for a betta?

The answer, with its conditions attached
Yes - for one betta, in a cycled tank of five to ten gallons, with the air pump actually running and the sponge rinsed when flow drops. Under those four conditions a sponge filter is not a compromise. It is the filtration we would choose over a hang-on-back for a long-finned fish.
Every unhappy answer to this question comes from one of those four conditions quietly failing. The rest of this page is each one in turn.
What a sponge filter actually does
Air rises through a lift tube and drags water through open-cell foam. That gives you two of the three filtration jobs at once:
- Mechanical. The foam strains solids out of the water column.
- Biological. The enormous surface area inside the foam hosts the nitrifying bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. This is the job that keeps a fish alive, and foam is very good at it.
- Chemical. Nothing. There is no carbon and no resin. For a normal betta tank that is fine - chemical filtration is a tool for specific jobs, not a permanent requirement.
What it does not do is polish. Water in a sponge-only tank is clean but very slightly less crystalline than water through a fine mechanical pad. That is a cosmetic difference, not a welfare one.
Condition one: the tank is cycled
A sponge filter in an uncycled tank is a lump of clean foam. The filtration is the bacteria, and bacteria take weeks to establish. This is the single most common reason someone concludes a sponge filter “is not enough” - the filter was fine, the colony did not exist yet.
Cycle the tank first, and confirm it with a test kit rather than with the calendar. A cycled tank processes a 2 ppm ammonia dose to zero ammonia and zero nitrite inside 24 hours; until it does that, no filter of any kind is enough.
Condition two: the volume is right
Filtration capacity is not the constraint in a nano tank - water volume is. A rated 5-gallon holds 4.3 gallons and a 10-gallon holds 8.5, and the smaller that buffer, the faster any mistake concentrates.

Notice the pattern: it is never the betta that outgrows the sponge. It is the tank mates. The threshold is bioload, and the fix is more biological media, not more flow.
Condition three: the air pump is doing its job
The sponge has no motor. Everything it does depends on a column of bubbles, which means the air pump, the airline and the check valve are all part of the filter.
- A weak or failing pump is an invisible failure - the sponge looks the same, the bubbles just slow down, and flow through the foam drops.
- A pump below the water line with no check valve can siphon tank water backward into itself when the power goes off. Fit the check valve.
- The valve is your flow control. This is a real advantage: a sponge filter is the most finely adjustable filtration in the hobby, and you can dial it to a betta exactly.
The noise nobody mentions
The pump hums and the bubbles pop at the surface. On a desk or a bedside table that is a genuine consideration and it is the honest reason some people move to a hang-on-back. Standing the pump on a folded towel rather than a hard shelf removes most of the buzz, and running it a little softer removes most of the popping. We are not going to pretend it is silent.
Condition four: you rinse it
A sponge filter clogs slowly and invisibly. When the bubbles look the same but the flow through the foam has halved, filtration has halved with it.
Squeeze it out in a bucket of old tank water when you do a water change - never under the faucet, because chlorine kills the colony you spent a month growing. Do not replace the sponge; rinse it. If it genuinely disintegrates, add a new one alongside the old for a few weeks before removing the old, so the bacteria have somewhere to migrate to. The same rule governs every other filter media.
When a sponge filter is genuinely not enough
A heavily stocked community. More fish is more ammonia, and past a point you want more media than one sponge holds. Add a second filter rather than swapping this one out.
When you want the water polished. Fine mechanical media clears the last haze of fine particulate. A sponge will not.
When you cannot live with the pump. That is a legitimate reason and we would not argue with it. The sponge versus hang-on-back comparison sets out what you trade.
When the tank has no lid and sits in a cold room. Bubbles increase surface agitation and evaporation, which costs you a little heat. It is a small effect, but so is the margin in a nano - the same argument we make about lids applies.
The case for buying one anyway
Even if you run a hang-on-back, a sponge filter is a few dollars and it earns its place: it keeps working through a power cut, it is the only filtration that cannot injure a shrimplet or shred a fin, and a spare seeded sponge sitting in your main tank is an instant cycled filter for a quarantine tank on the day you need one. We would own one regardless of what else is on the tank.

Nano sponge filter with air pump
The cheapest correct answer for a betta, and the one we would fit if we could only fit one thing. A sponge filter has no impeller, no outflow jet and no way to shred a fin. It is also the only filtration in this list that keeps working when the power comes back on after an outage without needing to re-prime. What it does not have is a manufacturer: these are sold under a dozen interchangeable brands with no published specifications at all, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Do sponge filters oxygenate the water?
Indirectly, and that is worth being precise about. The bubbles themselves transfer very little oxygen; what matters is the surface agitation they create, and gas exchange happens at the surface. A betta also breathes atmospheric air through its labyrinth organ, so oxygen is rarely its limiting factor anyway.
How often should I clean a sponge filter?
When the flow through the foam noticeably drops - typically every few weeks. Squeeze it in a bucket of old tank water, never under the faucet, and put the same sponge back. Replacing it outright throws away the bacterial colony that is doing the actual filtering.
Sponge filter or hang-on-back for a betta?
