How many gallons does a betta need?
Five gallons rated, which is about 4.25 gallons of water once there is substrate in it. The reason is not swimming room - it is how fast a small volume goes wrong.

The answer
Five US gallons, rated. That is about 4.3 gallons of actual water once you allow 15% for substrate, hardscape and the fill line - our stated assumption, used everywhere on this site so the numbers on one page cannot disagree with the numbers on another.
Ten gallons is better, and the difference is larger than the two-times ratio suggests. Aquarium Co-Op puts the recommendation at “at least 5 to 10 gallons” and gives a reason we would repeat: more water gives the fish room and lets you go longer between cleanings before the water gets too dirty.
The reason is buffer, not swimming room
This is where most of the internet gets the argument backwards. A betta is a small fish with a small territory. It does not need five gallons of space to swim in - it needs five gallons of water to dilute things into.
Three things scale directly with volume, and all three are what kill fish:
Ammonia concentration. A betta produces roughly the same amount of waste whatever tank it is in. In 2.6 gallons that waste reaches a dangerous concentration far sooner than in 4.3, and sooner again than in 8.5. The fish did not change; the denominator did.
Temperature stability. Water has thermal mass. Ten gallons takes roughly twice as long to follow the room as five does. That is the whole reason a bigger tank is described as “more forgiving” - it gives you hours to notice a problem instead of minutes. See the temperature page.
Your margin for error. Overfeed a 20-gallon and you get a slightly higher nitrate reading. Overfeed a 2-gallon and you get an ammonia spike. New keepers make mistakes, which is not a criticism - it is a design constraint, and volume is how you engineer around it.

Why 5 and not 2.5?
Because 2.6 gallons is where a single missed water change becomes an ammonia problem rather than a slightly worse reading. There is no bright line in the biology - the fish does not know how many gallons it is in - but there is a practical one in how much a normal person’s inattention costs.
The other half of the answer is length. A five-gallon tank is typically 16 to 19 inches long; a 2.5 is 10 to 12. A betta patrols horizontally, and doubling the length of its patrol is a bigger change to its day than doubling the volume.
Why the tank is not the expensive part
A five-gallon glass tank is one of the cheapest objects in this hobby. The spend is the heater, the filter, the light and the substrate - and every one of those costs the same for a five-gallon as for a ten. The marginal cost of buying twice the tank is usually under twenty dollars, and it buys you the single largest improvement available to you.
If money is the constraint, buy a plain ten-gallon glass tank and a sponge filter rather than a designer five-gallon kit. It will be a better tank in every respect except how it looks on a desk.
On bowls
A one-gallon bowl is 0.9 gallons of water with no filtration, no heater and no surface agitation. Bettas can breathe atmospheric air through a labyrinth organ, which is the entire basis of the bowl myth, and it is true - a betta in a bowl does not suffocate. It dies of ammonia and of cold instead, slowly, over months, which is why the myth survives: the fish does not die on the day the mistake is made. The longer version is here.
What the volume decides downstream
Everything, which is why this page sits under a hub about tanks but is really the entry point to the whole site:
- Heater wattage. 5 US gal rated, less 15% for substrate and fill line, is 4.3 gal of water. A 78F target minus a coldest-room 68F is a 10F lift. 4.3 x 0.35 x 10 = 15.1W required. Nothing is sold at 15.1W, so the answer is the 25W. The full sum.
- Filter turnover. 4.3 gal of actual water x 4 turnovers an hour is about 17.2 GPH. Past roughly 25.8 GPH you are baffling the outflow or buying a different filter. Why it matters.
- Dechlorinator dose. A 50% change on a rated 5-gallon is about 2.1 gallons of new water, which at Seachem’s published rate is a fifth of a milliliter. You are measuring with a syringe, not a cap.
- Stocking. Invertebrates only at five gallons. Fish start at ten.

Can a betta live in 2.5 gallons?
It can survive there. 2.6 gallons of water swings temperature and accumulates ammonia fast enough that a single missed water change or a warm week becomes a real event, so you are running with no margin. If 2.5 is genuinely all the space you have, the mitigations are a heater sized per our 3-gallon page, twice-weekly water changes, and very light feeding.
Is a 10-gallon too big for one betta?
No. There is no upper limit on tank size for a betta - a larger tank is more stable, easier to maintain per unit of water, and lets you plant and scape properly. The only real cost is more substrate and a slightly larger heater.
Why do pet shops sell 1-gallon betta tanks?
Because bettas breathe atmospheric air and therefore survive in water that would kill most fish, which makes tiny unfiltered containers commercially viable in a way they are not for anything else. Surviving and thriving are different standards, and the retail shelf is not making a husbandry recommendation.
Does a heavily planted tank change the volume answer?
It helps, genuinely - plants consume nitrate and stabilize the tank - but it does not change the floor. Plants do essentially nothing about the thing volume protects you from, which is the speed at which a small body of water moves when something goes wrong. Plant the five-gallon; do not plant a two-gallon and call it a five.
Where does your 15% substrate figure come from?
It is our stated assumption, not a manufacturer number, and we label it as one everywhere it is used. An inch of substrate in a nano tank plus a fill line below the rim is roughly that. Using one figure across the whole site is what stops the wattage on one page disagreeing with the wattage on another.
