Do betta fish need an air pump?
Not for breathing - a betta takes its air from the surface. It needs one for exactly one reason, and that reason is a filter, not the fish.

The short answer
A betta does not need an air pump to breathe. It has a labyrinth organ and takes atmospheric air directly from the surface, which is why a betta in still water is not a betta short of oxygen.
A betta tank needs an air pump in exactly one situation: when the tank runs a sponge filter. A sponge filter has no motor. The air pump is its motor. Without the pump there is no flow through the foam, and without flow the bacteria in the foam start dying within hours.
So the useful question is not “does my betta need a bubbler?” It is “what filter am I running?” Everything below follows from that.
Why oxygen is not the reason
Most fish take all their oxygen through their gills from dissolved oxygen in the water, and in a crowded or warm tank that can genuinely run short. A betta is not most fish. Its labyrinth organ lets it gulp air at the surface - you will see it do this regularly, and it is normal behavior rather than distress.
That is also why the bowl myth persists. It is true that a betta will not suffocate in still water. It is also true that a bowl kills bettas anyway, slowly, through ammonia and cold rather than lack of air - what actually happens in a bowl works through the arithmetic. An air pump fixes neither of those problems.
Where dissolved oxygen genuinely matters in a betta tank is for the bacteria, not the fish. Nitrifying bacteria are aerobic, and the colony living in your filter media needs oxygenated water moving through it continuously. That is the real job an air pump does, and it only does it if the filter is air-driven.

Why a sponge filter is worth the pump
If the only reason to buy an air pump is to run a sponge filter, the fair next question is whether a sponge filter is worth running. For a betta, we think it is the best filtration there is - and the four conditions attached to that are worth reading before you buy.
- No impeller. There is nothing that can shred a long fin or injure a shrimplet.
- The finest flow control in the hobby. An air valve dials the current continuously, which matters enormously for a fish that cannot swim against a jet. Our turnover target for a betta is 4 tank volumes an hour, ceiling 6, and a valve is the easiest way to land there.
- It survives a power cut. There is no chamber to drain and nothing to re-prime when the power comes back.
- No cartridge, ever. The foam gets rinsed in old tank water and goes back in.
What size air pump to buy
For one sponge filter in a tank a single betta belongs in - a rated 5-gallon holding 4.3 gallons of water, or a 10-gallon holding 8.5 - a pump rated for tanks up to 10 gallons is correct. Buying bigger does not help: you will spend the pump’s life throttling it back at the valve.

The check valve is not optional
An air pump sitting below the water line can siphon tank water backward down the airline when the power goes off, flooding the pump and anything it sits on. A check valve is a one-way plastic fitting that costs very little and stops that completely. We could not find a check valve stated as included with the pump itself, so check your sponge filter kit - many include one - and if not, buy one separately. The simplest alternative is to stand the pump above the water level, which removes the siphon risk entirely.
Setting it up so it is quiet
Noise is the honest reason people give up on air-driven filtration, and most of it is avoidable.

Put the pump on something soft
A folded towel or a foam pad under the pump absorbs the vibration that a hard shelf amplifies into a buzz. This single change removes most of the noise people complain about.

Fit a valve and turn it down
An inline air valve between pump and filter controls the flow. A betta wants gentle flow anyway, and a pump running against a partly closed valve bubbles more softly at the surface.

One-way fittings are directional. Installed backward they block the air completely, which looks exactly like a dead pump.

Let the airline hang in a drip loop
Like every cable leaving the tank, the airline should dip below the level of the pump before rising to it, so any water tracking along it drips off instead of reaching the pump.
What an air pump does not do
It does not filter anything by itself. An air stone on its own moves the surface and adds a little gas exchange. It does not remove ammonia, and a tank running only an air stone is a tank without filtration.
It does not keep the tank warm. The opposite, slightly: bubbles increase surface agitation and evaporation, which costs a little heat. In a lidless tank in a cold room that is worth knowing - a betta needs a heater in essentially every American home regardless.
It does not replace water changes. Nitrate, the end product of the cycle, is removed by changing water, not by aeration.
Should you run it all night?
Yes, if it drives a sponge filter. The bacteria in the foam need oxygenated water moving through them continuously, and switching the pump off overnight stops the flow and starts killing the colony within hours. If the noise keeps you awake, damp the pump or turn it down at the valve rather than switching it off.
If the pump only runs an air stone and the tank has a separate motorized filter, turning it off at night does no harm to the filtration. The betta will not notice.
Do bettas like bubbles?
It varies by fish, and we are not going to claim a preference we have not observed. What is structurally true is that a vigorous stream of bubbles creates a current, and a long-finned betta struggles against current. If your betta avoids the side of the tank with the air stone, or hangs behind hardscape all day, the flow is too strong - turn the valve down before concluding anything else.
