Why a sponge filter suits a betta specifically
There is no impeller. Every powered filter draws water through a spinning rotor. A long-finned betta that gets pulled against an intake, or a shrimp that gets through one, meets that rotor. A sponge filter is a piece of foam and a lift tube; the only moving thing is a column of bubbles.
The flow is set by the air pump. A two-dollar plastic valve on the airline gives you continuous adjustment from a trickle to a boil. No powered nano filter offers that range, and most offer no adjustment at all.
The surface area is enormous for the money. An open-cell foam block the size of a fist has more colonizable surface than most nano cartridges.
It survives a power cut. When the power comes back, a sponge filter starts again with its colony intact. A hang-on-back sits dry in its chamber, and depending how long the outage was, some of that colony does not come back.
The honest problem with this category
There is no manufacturer. Nano sponge filters are sold under brand names that appear and vanish within eighteen months, with no published flow rate, no published rated capacity and no consistency between production runs. The specification table on this page says “not published by any seller in this category” because that is literally the situation.
On a site whose method is reading what manufacturers publish, that is a real weakness and we are not going to talk around it. We recommend the format confidently and we cannot recommend a specific unit on anything but its physical description.
What to actually look for
Coarse foam, not fine. Fine foam clogs and turns into a mechanical filter that starves its own bacteria. Coarse foam keeps flowing.
A weighted base. Sponge filters float. The ones with a ceramic or heavy plastic base stay put; the ones without need burying in substrate, which defeats the point.
A size sensibly matched to the tank. A filter sold for a 40-gallon in a 5-gallon is not dangerous, it is just a large black object in a small display.
Two, if the tank is over ten gallons. Redundancy costs almost nothing here, and it means a clogged filter is not a crisis.
The air pump is the real purchase
The sponge costs a few dollars and lasts years. The air pump runs continuously forever, is the only thing in the arrangement that makes noise, and is the part that fails. Buy a better one than you think you need, put it above the water line or fit a check valve - otherwise a power cut siphons tank water back down the airline and onto your desk - and sit it on something soft, because pump buzz is transmitted through the furniture more than through the air.

Rinse the foam in dechlorinated water
New foam carries manufacturing dust. Squeeze it out a few times in treated water, never under the tap.

Assemble and site it in a back corner
Lift tube on, base weighted. A back corner keeps it out of the sightline and lets the rising column push water along the length of the tank.

Fit a check valve above the water line
Between the pump and the tank. Without one, a power cut lets the tank siphon backwards through the airline. This is a two-dollar part that prevents a genuinely bad afternoon.

Set the flow with a valve, watching the fish
Start low. You want visible but gentle surface movement, not a rolling boil. If the betta is being pushed around or hiding in the far corner, turn it down.

Seed it, then cycle
Squeezed media from an established tank is the fastest seed. Otherwise bottled bacteria on Seachem’s published schedule - one capful per 10 US gallons on day one, then one per 20 gallons daily for a week - alongside a fishless cycle.
Maintenance, which is almost nothing
Squeeze the foam out in old tank water during a water change, every month or two, when the bubbles slow or the sponge looks packed. Do not replace it unless it is physically falling apart - and if you do, run the old and new sponges together for a month first so the colony transfers.
