Nothing sold for this tank is anywhere near it
The AquaClear 20 is rated 5-20 gallons, which means a 5-gallon is the very bottom of its range - it is designed to turn over four times as much water as you have. Fluval’s Nano filter is rated to fifteen gallons, three times your tank. The pump in the Fluval Spec V is published at 55-80 GPH, which is thirteen to nineteen turnovers an hour.
None of that is a scandal. Filters are rated for the largest tank they can adequately serve, not the smallest they suit. But it does mean every powered option for a 5-gallon betta tank arrives too strong and has to be turned down, and that is not what the packaging implies.
Which is why the sponge filter wins this page
It is the only option whose flow you set rather than reduce. An air valve gives you continuous adjustment from a trickle upward, so you dial in the flow rather than fighting an over-specified pump. The full case, including the category’s real weakness - it has no manufacturer and no published specification of any kind.
If you want a powered filter anyway
Reasonable - the noise of an air pump on a desk is a genuine objection. Then:
- Fit the spray bar. The Fluval Nano includes one. It converts a single jet into a wide low-velocity sheet, which is exactly the change you want.
- Turn the flow control to minimum and leave it there.
- Aim the output at the back glass, not down the length of the tank.
- Baffle whatever is left. Filter foam over the nozzle, ten minutes.
A pre-filter sponge is not optional at this size
Any intake in a 5-gallon is close enough to the fish to matter. A coarse sponge over the intake stops a long-finned betta being held against it, stops shrimp being drawn in, and adds biological surface. It costs a couple of dollars and there is no argument against it.

What we cannot tell you
What any of these actually flow, because none of the manufacturers publish it. The turnover targets above are arithmetic; matching a specific product to them requires a figure that does not exist. We would rather publish the target and name the gap than assign a plausible GPH to a filter and let you build on it.
