Fluval Spec V review
The best-specified 5-gallon on the market, and the one whose pump is most obviously wrong for a betta out of the box. Both of those are true and both are fixable.

That is an unusually complete disclosure for this category, and it is most of the reason this tank ranks where it does. Several competitors publish no pump output and no lumen figure at all, which leaves a buyer unable to compute turnover or judge whether the light will grow anything.
The footprint is the argument
Nineteen and a half inches long in a five-gallon tank. That is the longest footprint anybody sells at this volume, and for a betta - a horizontal patroller - it matters more than the volume does. A 5-gallon cube gives the same water and half the patrol.
The trade is depth: 6.5 inches front to back is narrow, which constrains aquascaping. You are building a shallow relief rather than a landscape with depth, and hardscape that would look good in a cube reads as a wall here. Scaping a tank this shape is its own problem.
What it actually holds
About 4.3 gallons once there is substrate in it and you have stopped filling below the rim, on our stated 15% assumption. Note also that the external glass dimensions compute to more than five gallons - 19.5 x 6.5 x 11.5 inches is about 6.3 gallons of box - because the rear filter chamber takes up part of the length. The rated five gallons already accounts for that, which is Fluval being straight with you rather than measuring the outside.
The real problem: the pump
Fluval publishes 55-80 US GPH. Into 4.3 gallons of water that is thirteen to nineteen turnovers an hour. Our target for a betta is four. 4.3 gal of actual water x 4 turnovers an hour is about 17.2 GPH. Past roughly 25.8 GPH you are baffling the outflow or buying a different filter.
A long-finned betta in nineteen turnovers an hour spends its life swimming. It will hide behind whatever it can find, it will rest on the substrate at the far end, and people describe this as the fish being “shy”.
The fix takes ten minutes and costs almost nothing: a piece of coarse filter foam wedged over the outflow nozzle turns a jet into a diffuse seep. Some people instead point the nozzle at the back glass, which helps but not enough on this tank. There is no way to reduce the pump’s speed electrically, so the intervention is mechanical. Buy this alongside it
A 25W heater, which fits in the rear chamber and disappears completely - one of the genuine advantages of a rear-chamber tank. 5 US gal rated, less 15% for substrate and fill line, is 4.3 gal of water. A 78F target minus a coldest-room 68F is a 10F lift. 4.3 x 0.35 x 10 = 15.1W required. Nothing is sold at 15.1W, so the answer is the 25W.
The light is better than it needs to be
Eight hundred and twenty-one lumens at 7000 K over a footprint this size is enough for anubias, java fern and crypts without any further equipment. It is arguably too much: a bright light over a low-tech tank with no CO2 grows algae rather than plants. Put it on a timer at eight hours and resist the urge to run it longer because the tank looks nice lit.
What we cannot tell you about this tank
How the pump sounds after a year, whether the LED holds its output toward the 50,000-hour claim, how the seams age, or whether the rear chamber is annoying to clean in practice. We have not owned one. Everything above is read off the published specification or computed from it, and where we have gone beyond that - the aquascaping constraint of a 6.5-inch depth, for instance - it is arithmetic and geometry rather than experience.

Fluval Spec V Aquarium Kit, 5 US Gal
The one nano kit whose published numbers all point the same way. Nineteen and a half inches of length in a five-gallon footprint is the whole argument: a betta swims horizontally, and this is the only kit at this volume that gives it a long tank instead of a tall one. The rear chamber hides the pump and media, the 821-lumen LED is enough for low-light plants, and the pump's 55-80 GPH is far too much flow for a betta straight out of the box - which is a solvable problem, not a dealbreaker.
Skip it if: You will not baffle the outflow. At 55-80 GPH into 4.25 gallons of water this runs 13-19 turnovers an hour, three times our 4x target, and a long-finned betta will spend its life fighting it.
Fluval P25 Submersible Heater, 25W
The default answer for a 5-gallon betta tank, and the reason the folk rule of thumb happens to land in the right place. Our sum for a 5-gallon in a normal US room - 68F, Aquarium Co-Op's published figure for a typical American house - is 15.1W. Nothing is sold at 15W. The next size up is 25, and that is the P25.
Skip it if: You want to run a degree cooler in summer or warmer for a sick fish. This is preset; buy the adjustable if you want a dial.

Is the Fluval Spec V good for a betta?
Yes, with one modification. The footprint is the best available at five gallons and the light is genuinely good. The pump, published at 55-80 GPH into 4.3 gallons of water, is far too strong for a long-finned betta and needs baffling on day one.
Does the Spec V come with a heater?
No. Fluval does not include one, and a betta needs one. Our sum for this tank in a 68°F room gives 15.1W, so buy a 25W and put it in the rear chamber.
How do you reduce the flow in a Fluval Spec V?
Mechanically - there is no speed control. A piece of coarse filter foam over the outflow nozzle is the standard fix and takes ten minutes. The method, with the alternatives that do and do not work.
Can you keep shrimp in a Spec V?
Yes, and it is a good shrimp tank - though you will want a pre-filter sponge over the intake, because a 55-80 GPH intake in a five-gallon tank will take shrimplets into the rear chamber.
How much substrate does a Spec V need?
Using Fluval’s own published formula at one inch deep across the 19.5 x 6.5 inch footprint: 2.1 kg, about 4.6 lb. The smallest bag of Fluval Stratum is 4.4 lb, so one bag covers it.
