How to baffle a betta filter
Your filter is probably running three to five times the turnover a betta wants. Here are four fixes, ranked, and one popular one that makes the problem worse.

First, work out whether you have a problem
Compute the turnover if you can: published GPH divided by your actual water volume. Over 6 turnovers an hour is too much for a betta.

Most nano filters do not publish a GPH figure at all, so more often you are reading the fish. The signs:
- It stays in one corner, usually the one furthest from the outflow.
- Its fins stream backwards while it is stationary.
- It rests on leaves or substrate rather than holding position mid-water.
- It gets visibly pushed when it stops swimming.
- You describe it to people as “shy”.
The four fixes, in the order we would try them

Turn the flow control down. Free, thirty seconds
Obvious, and frequently skipped. Fluval publishes flow control on both the AquaClear range and the Nano filter. It rarely gets you all the way there in a 5-gallon, because you are asking a filter designed for fifteen gallons to serve four - but it is the first move and it costs nothing.

Fit the spray bar, or aim the outflow at the glass
A spray bar takes a single high-velocity jet and spreads it across a wide low-velocity sheet - same volume, a fraction of the local speed. Fluval includes one with the Nano filter. If yours has no spray bar, aim the nozzle at the back glass, which dissipates the jet against a flat surface instead of firing it down the tank.

Foam over the outflow. A dollar, ten minutes
The standard fix, and the one that works on tanks with a fixed nozzle like the Fluval Spec. Take a piece of coarse filter foam, cut a slot, and push it onto the outflow so the water has to seep through it. A jet becomes a diffuse spread. Use coarse foam, not fine - fine foam clogs and turns into a restriction rather than a diffuser. Rinse it with the rest of your media.

For a waterfall return: a bottle baffle
A hang-on-back’s waterfall is the other half of the problem. Cut a strip from a plastic bottle, clip it over the outflow lip so the water runs down it rather than falling, and the surface disturbance drops sharply. It looks improvised because it is, and it works.
The fix that makes it worse
Do not restrict the intake. Wedging something over the intake or pinching the tube reduces the flow through the filter rather than the velocity into the tank. That starves the media of the oxygenated flow the bacteria need, makes the pump work against a restriction, and in a hang-on-back can drop the water level in the chamber enough to run it dry.
Always slow the water after it has passed through the media, never before.
What about turning the filter off at night?
No. The colony needs continuous oxygenated flow; an eight-hour daily outage costs you bacteria, and switching back on pushes the accumulated waste into the tank in one go. If the flow is the problem, fix the flow.
Do not baffle it into stagnation
There is a floor as well as a ceiling. You still need visible surface movement, because that is what drives gas exchange, and you still need water moving through the media, because that is what feeds the bacteria. Aim for a surface that ripples rather than one that is glassy still. If the surface goes completely flat and a film starts forming on it, you have overcorrected.
The permanent fix
If you are baffling aggressively and still fighting it, the filter is wrong for the tank. A sponge filter run off an air valve gives you the flow you want by construction rather than by obstruction, and it is the cheapest thing in this hobby.

Nano sponge filter with air pump
The cheapest correct answer for a betta, and the one we would fit if we could only fit one thing. A sponge filter has no impeller, no outflow jet and no way to shred a fin. It is also the only filtration in this list that keeps working when the power comes back on after an outage without needing to re-prime. What it does not have is a manufacturer: these are sold under a dozen interchangeable brands with no published specifications at all, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Skip it if: You cannot live with an air pump humming on your desk, or with a black sponge in the corner of the display.

How do I know if my filter is too strong for my betta?
Divide the published GPH by your actual water volume; over 6 turnovers an hour is too much. If no GPH is published - which is usual - watch the fish. A betta that never leaves the far corner, or whose fins stream while it is stationary, is telling you.
Can I use a sponge to baffle the filter?
Yes, on the outflow. Coarse filter foam pushed onto the outflow nozzle is the standard fix. Never restrict the intake - that starves the media instead of slowing the water.
Will baffling reduce my filtration?
Not if you baffle the outflow. The same volume of water still passes through the media; you are only reducing its velocity as it enters the tank. It is baffling the intake that reduces filtration.
How much surface movement should a betta tank have?
Visible ripple, not a rolling boil and not glassy stillness. You need enough agitation for gas exchange; you do not need current the fish has to swim against. If a protein film starts forming on the surface, you have too little.
