Why plants are functional in a betta tank, not decorative
Four things they actually do:
Consume nitrate. The end product of the nitrogen cycle accumulates between water changes. Plants take it up directly. A planted tank climbs more slowly and is more forgiving of a missed week.
Break sight lines. This is the mechanism that makes tank mates possible at all - betta aggression is largely triggered by seeing something, and structure is what stops it seeing.
Give the betta somewhere to rest. Bettas sleep wedged on things, usually near the surface. A broad anubias leaf is exactly what they choose.
Out-compete algae. Algae and plants want the same nutrients and the same light. Healthy plants win that competition; an unplanted lit tank has no competitor.
Start with the rhizome plants
Anubias and java fern are the answer to almost every low-tech betta tank, and they share the property that makes them work: they attach to hardscape rather than rooting in substrate. That means they do not care what your substrate is, or whether you have one at all.
Aquarium Co-Op publishes Anubias Nana Petite at low light, 10-20 PAR, with no CO2 requirement, attached to rocks or wood. Java fern is published on the same terms. Any nano light on the market clears 10-20 PAR at nano depth without trying.
The mistake that kills both of them
Never bury the rhizome - the thick horizontal stem the leaves and roots come off. Buried rhizomes rot, and this is far and away the most common way people kill anubias and java fern. Tie the rhizome to wood or stone with cotton thread or a dab of superglue gel, and let the roots find their own way. The plant is holding on, not planted.
The other categories, and what they cost you
Floating plants - the underrated answer
Frogbit, red root floaters, salvinia. They have unlimited access to atmospheric CO2, so they grow far faster than anything submerged and export a great deal of nitrate. They shade the tank, which reduces algae. Bettas build bubble nests under them and rest in the dangling roots.
The cost is that they block your light for everything below, so plan for it rather than fighting it: floaters plus low-light rhizome plants is a coherent system, floaters plus a demanding carpet is not.
Rooted plants - cryptocoryne especially
Crypts are superb in a nano tank: slow, tolerant of low light, and they stay a sensible size. They need substrate with something in it, or root tabs.
They also melt. A newly planted crypt frequently loses every leaf over the following fortnight, which looks like death and is not - it is the plant discarding its emersed-grown foliage and regrowing submerged. Leave it alone. It comes back.
Carpeting plants - the honest warning
Dwarf hairgrass, monte carlo, dwarf baby tears. These are the plants in the photographs that made you want a planted tank, and in a low-tech nano they will thin, yellow and die back. They need high light and, in almost all cases, injected CO2.
That is not a failure of skill and there is no trick that gets around it. If you want a carpet, that is a CO2 build and a different budget.
How to attach a rhizome plant

Unwrap and inspect
Nursery plants arrive in a pot with rockwool around the roots. Remove all of it - rockwool trapped against a rhizome holds water and rots it.

Trim damaged leaves and long roots
Cut yellow or holed leaves at the base. Trim roots to an inch or so; they will regrow and attach.

Tie or glue to hardscape
Cotton thread wrapped round the rhizome and the wood works and rots away within a couple of months, by which time the roots have gripped. Cyanoacrylate gel is faster: a small dab on the rhizome, pressed onto dry wood, holds instantly and is aquarium-safe once cured.

Position for light, and for the fish
Anubias tolerates shade well, so it can go low or under a floating canopy. Java fern is best mid-height where its leaves break the sight line across the tank. Put at least one broad leaf near the surface - that is where the betta will sleep.

Leave it alone
Both plants melt back for a few weeks after being moved into new water. Resist the urge to intervene. Anubias in particular grows so slowly that a month of apparent inactivity is normal.
Where to buy them
A local shop, or a specialist plant seller, rather than a general marketplace. Plants ship badly, they arrive as a gamble, and a shop lets you see whether what you are buying has been grown emersed or submerged - which decides how much melt you are in for.
Whatever the source, quarantine or at least rinse. Plants are the standard route by which bladder snails and algae arrive in a tank.
What we cannot tell you
How any of these will grow in your water. Hardness, nitrate, spectrum and temperature all move the answer, and we have not grown these in a test tank. What we can do is cite the published light and CO2 requirement, name who published it, and describe the failure mode when it is not met - which is the whole method.
