The sum, for this exact tank
10 US gal rated, less 15% for substrate and fill line, is 8.5 gal of water. A 78F target minus a coldest-room 68F is a 10F lift. 8.5 x 0.35 x 10 = 29.7W required. Nothing is sold at 29.7W, so the answer is the 50W.
A rated 10-gallon holds about 8.5 gallons of water once there is an inch of substrate in it, some hardscape, and a fill line an inch below the rim. Against a typical American room - Aquarium Co-Op publishes 67 to 69°F as common - and a 78°F target, that is a 10-degree lift and 29.7 watts of heat.
The nearest size anybody sells is 50 watts, and Fluval happens to rate its 50W to fifteen gallons, so you are inside the manufacturer’s own envelope rather than at the edge of it. That is a more comfortable place to be than the 5-gallon buyer is in, where the sum lands at 15.1 watts and nothing is sold at 15.
How it changes with your room
Size against the coldest the room gets at night, not the number on your thermostat during the day. The row you want is the one that matches your January 3am, because that is the hour a heater either holds or does not.

Read down the last column and the answer is 50 watts from 68°F downward and 25 watts above it. We still say 50 in a warm room, for one reason: the only 25W in this class is rated by its maker to six gallons, and buying a heater ten gallons past its published capacity is exactly the habit this site exists to argue against. The 50W is the smallest heater whose manufacturer will say in print that it belongs in this tank.
At the 64°F row you are asking for a 14-degree lift, past the 12°F Fluval publishes as the ceiling for a single heater. Fifty watts still clears the arithmetic - 41.6W required against 50 available - but it will run close to continuously all winter, and a heater running continuously is a thermostat cycling toward the day it sticks.

We have not run any of these heaters. There is no test bench here and no drawer of samples, so the criteria below are all things that can be checked from a published document rather than claimed from experience.
Published spec depth. Wattage is on every box. Rated capacity is on most. The third figure - either a maximum lift over ambient or a control accuracy - is the one that tells you whether the heater works in your room, and it is published by almost nobody. A heater that prints all three scores 9 or 10. Wattage alone scores 3.
Sizing honesty. Whether a buyer can compute their own answer from what the maker publishes, or is being asked to trust a gallon range with no conditions attached.
Cold-room headroom. How the heater behaves at a 64°F room rather than a comfortable one. At ten gallons every 50W option has genuine headroom, which is why this category scores high across the board here and did not on the 3-gallon page.
Concealability. A standard 10-gallon is roughly 20 inches long by 10 deep by 12 tall. Length matters less than it does in a 5-gallon because you have twenty inches of back glass to hide something along - but the EHEIM at 9.6 inches is still half the tank, and that is a real cost in a scaped tank.
Control. Preset versus dial. For a betta the target temperature does not change, so preset is not the drawback it sounds like - right up until you need to raise the tank for a sick fish or drop it in a heatwave. The longer version is on preset versus adjustable heaters.
Why 50 watts and not 75
Because the arithmetic does not ask for 75 until your room is genuinely cold. At a 62°F room our sum gives 47.6W, which the 50 still covers. It takes a 60°F room before the number crosses into 75W territory at 53.6W - and a room that cold is asking for an 18-degree lift, half again the 12°F Fluval says one heater should be asked for.
So the honest answer at that point is not a bigger heater. It is a lid, moving the tank off the exterior wall, and if the room really lives at 60°F all winter, two heaters rather than one enormous one. Buying 75 or 100 watts to feel safe puts more stored energy behind a single thermostat in 8.5 gallons of water, and a stuck-on thermostat is the failure that actually kills fish in tanks this size.
The cheapest degree you will ever buy
Before you upgrade a heater, fit a lid and move the tank off an exterior wall and away from a window and a heating vent. That combination typically lifts the stable water temperature by a couple of degrees for nothing, which is the same lift a wattage upgrade would buy - and unlike a bigger heater it does not add a failure mode. A vent blowing warm air at the glass is as bad as a draft, because it makes the temperature swing rather than sit.
One 50W, or two 25s?
Ten gallons is the first tank size where splitting the load is genuinely practical, and it is safer arithmetic. Two 25W heaters mean a thermostat that sticks on has half the power to work with, and a thermostat that dies leaves you with half your heat rather than none - which in a January bedroom is the difference between a cool tank and a cold one.
What it costs you is two heater bodies in a 20-inch tank, two power cords, and roughly double the money. It also puts you back in the position of buying a 25W rated to six gallons for a ten-gallon tank, twice. We would take the single 50 in a normally heated house and split the load only in a room that genuinely runs cold, which is the same conclusion the method page reaches from the other direction.
Preset, dial or display - which of the three you actually want
Preset is the Fluval P50: a fixed 76 to 78°F window, no dial, nothing to set wrong. For a betta that window is the correct temperature, so the absence of a control is a feature for most of this page’s readers. It is also the only one of the three whose maker publishes a maximum lift, which is the figure our whole wattage constant is derived from.
A dial is the EHEIM. You want one if the room swings hard between seasons, if you keep something other than a betta that wants a different number, or if you may ever need to raise the tank a degree or two for a sick fish. EHEIM is also the only manufacturer here that publishes how accurate the dial is - plus or minus half a degree Celsius - which is a claim the others simply do not make.
A display or indicator is the Fluval T50: a dial plus a 360-degree ring that tells you at a glance whether the heater is calling for heat. That is genuinely useful, and it is still not a thermometer. The ring reports what the heater thinks it is doing; only a separate thermometer at the other end of the tank reports what the water is actually doing.
Where the heater goes in a 20 x 10 x 12 tank
Horizontally, along the back glass, an inch or two above the substrate, with the filter outflow moving water past it. Heat rises, so a heater lying low puts its output into the coldest water in the tank and lets the flow distribute it; a heater standing vertically in the corner of a 12-inch-tall tank warms the top third and leaves a cold layer at the bottom where the fish sleeps.
Then put the thermometer at the opposite end of the tank from the heater. Not beside it, where it reads the heater rather than the tank, and not a stick-on liquid crystal strip, which reads the glass and the room as much as the water. A glass alcohol thermometer or a cheap digital probe is a few dollars and it is the only object in this list taking a measurement rather than making a claim.
A 10-gallon changes what you can stock. It does not change the sum.
Ten gallons is the size where a betta stops being the only sensible occupant and a small group of tank mates becomes possible - what actually works in a 10-gallon goes through the volume threshold first, as every stocking page here does.
None of that changes the wattage. Fish do not heat water and they do not cool it; the only inputs to the sum are how much water you have and how cold the room gets. What extra stock does change is how much a temperature swing costs you, because more animals in the same buffer means less margin when something goes wrong. That is an argument for the thermometer, not for a bigger heater.
What we cannot tell you
Which of these three holds its calibration after a year, which brand sticks on most often, and whether the EHEIM’s published half-degree accuracy survives two winters in a real room. Those are the questions that decide whether a heater is any good. Answering them takes a lot of heaters and a lot of time, we have neither, and we would rather say so than dress a specification sheet up as a test report.
