The best nano fish for a small tank
The awkward fact about nano fish is that almost all of them shoal, and six of anything needs more water than a nano tank has.

The calculation nobody does
“Nano fish” describes an adult size, usually under about an inch and a half. It says nothing about how many you need, and that is where nano stocking goes wrong.
Almost every nano fish is a shoaling species with a minimum group of six. So the question is never “how big is this fish”. It is adult size multiplied by minimum group size, and that number is usually larger than a nano tank can carry.
Six one-inch fish is six inches of fish. In 4.3 gallons of actual water that is a heavy stocking level for a beginner, and it is before you have added anything else. This is why the honest answer to “what nano fish for a 5-gallon” is usually one betta, or a shrimp colony.

What to select on
Adult size, not the size in the shop. Shop stock is juvenile. Look up the adult size of everything before you buy it, every time.
Minimum shoal size. Below it, the fish is chronically stressed and usually short-lived. This is the constraint that eliminates most nano fish from most nano tanks.
Temperature overlap. A great many popular nano fish want the low 70s, and a betta wants 78. That is a genuine incompatibility rather than a detail, and it is the reason several commonly suggested betta tank mates are wrong even at the right volume.
Where in the tank it lives. Bottom, mid-water or surface. A stocking plan that puts everything in the same layer is a crowded tank at a low fish count.
Whether it nips. Fin-nippers and long-finned fish are mutually exclusive, and a betta is a long-finned fish.
The single-species nano tank
The best-looking small tanks we have seen are one species, properly grouped, in a heavily planted ten or twenty gallons. A tight shoal of one small fish moving together reads far better than four species of two, and it is dramatically easier to keep. If the goal is a tank that looks good rather than a collection, this is the answer.
Where to buy

Ask the shop what temperature their tanks run at and how long the stock has been in. Fish that arrived that morning have not been quarantined by anybody.

Availability varies enormously by region, wild versus captive-bred stock behave differently, and a species that is bulletproof from one supplier arrives fragile from another. The point at which a nano tank stops being a compromise. Sixteen gallons is enough water to hold temperature through a power cut, enough length for a proper scape, and - this is the part that matters for this site - enough volume that a betta can actually have tank mates without you gambling on it.

Java Fern
The other rhizome plant, and the one that gives a small tank height without needing a substrate. Same rules as anubias: tie it to wood, never bury the rhizome, low light, no CO2. It grows faster than anubias, which makes it the better choice if you want the plants doing real nitrate work.
Skip it if: You want a tidy plant. Java fern throws plantlets off its own leaves and will slowly colonize everything you tie it near.

Ten gallons for a single shoal of six genuinely small species, and twenty is where it stops being tight. Below that you are keeping a group at less than its minimum, which is the most common welfare failure in nano tanks.
Can nano fish live with a betta?

Do nano fish need a heater?
Most tropical nano species do, and this is where temperature overlap matters - several want the low 70s rather than a betta’s 78. Check the range for the species before assuming it shares a tank with a betta comfortably.
